Headteacher’s Welcome

On behalf of all students, staff and governors, welcome to Vijay International School, Praslin. Whether you are a parent, sponsor, prospective employee or just a curious visitor, I hope you find what you are looking for on our website. Should you require any further information, please contact us. Or alternatively, if you are in Seychelles please visit us in Baie Ste Anne, Praslin. Myself or a member of our team will be delighted to show you around the school

VISP was constructed on the site of the old government school at Baie St Anne, a location of great beauty and flexibility and first opened it’s doors in 2008. The school carries the name of Mr V.J. Patel, who is the principal sponsor of the school, and whose company, Vijay Construction, built the school.

This project has only been made possible through the vision and generosity of a small group of activists; people with a passionate desire to see educational choice extended on the island of Praslin through the establishment of a high-quality international school.

The school is run on a not-for-profit basis and is owned by an association of parents who have their children enrolled at the school. The school offers educational programmes to over 240 children aged 3 years to 18 years, with Year 11 students taking IGCSE examinations and Year 12 and 13 taking AS and A2 examinations with CIE (Cambridge International Examinations).

Our school motto is ‘You are not born for yourself but for the world’. Praslin is a small island with a population of just over 6000 people. We feel that it is essential that our students acquire a global perspective and are aware of the different lifestyles and circumstances which exist in other countries.

We value the parents of our school and are always looking for ways to make improvements to the formal curriculum and the informal curriculum. A senior member of staff is always available to speak with you if there is something that you wish to discuss urgently. All teachers are available and willing to speak with you about your child’s progress at appropriate times.

We celebrate the fact that the children and staff of the school come from very different and varied backgrounds. We are committed to ensuring that all children have the same opportunities and we will do our best to make sure that your child finds VISP a rewarding and exciting place to begin their lifelong education.

We believe in challenging the children to achieve their absolute best. We aim to give them a good grounding in literacy and numeracy whilst not forgetting that the other subjects in the curriculum are essential to a child’s development. Students follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales, however we do reserve the right to modify the content so to suit our community. We emphasise the importance of creative thinking and intend to instil the academic and social qualities in our students that will enable them to not only be successful in their chosen career paths but also become good citizens.

We regularly organise day trips for classes and international trips and holiday programmes whenever possible. We have a wide range of extra curricular activities and we give all children the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, with our dramatic productions rightly considered to be of an extremely high quality. Despite being a small school we compete and often succeed at national level in sporting competition. In the past few years the school has won medals in swimming and athletics and have competed well against other schools in a number of team sports. Having added a sports hall to our site in 2016, we now offer a range of sports to adults and children in the community.

We pride ourselves on personalising our delivery and making sure that all students are happy and have their individual needs met. We have a strong Learning Support department which identifies, assesses and responds to a child’s individual requirements. Identified children have an Individual Provision Map (IPM) which brings child, teachers and parents together within a common strategic objective which is realistic and attainable.

We are fortunate to have an extremely active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) which organises a full calendar of events in support of the school. Not only do these events raise funds but they are always great fun to attend.

Most importantly we aim to have a school of happy and well-motivated children for whom academic and examination success is an inevitable by-product of an engaging curriculum, great teaching, and a secure and stimulating learning environment.

We look forward to welcoming you personally to VISP and hope that you and your child will enjoy his or her time with us.

Mark Howell
